August 17, 2002by the campfire [starling morningmist][the pine barrens, nj | kimber's home]
(starling morningmist)
Sitting near the firepit outside Kimber's home. The fire low now, little more than embers. Now and then a breeze bringing new life to the coals, causing them to flare bright red and yellow. Sitting Indian fashion. Head tilted back to look up through the trees to what can be seen of the sky through the canopy above.
Hair so dark it seems like part of the night as it tumbles down her back, sliding across her shoulders when she moves to reach for a stick to toss into the fire pit. Attention turning to the fire, waiting for the stick to catch and burn. The sound of tree frogs and insects surrounding her. Not too far away a shotgun rests on the ground, leaning against the log at her back.
it's an exploration that drives him
and perhaps a hunger
something tugging at the Galliard which he finds cannot be denied (indulgence heroin to the addict) wandering aimlessly (and not too carefully) along the almost hidden paths, half-idly following the crackling sounds a fire teases ahead (faint flickers in mismatched blue eyes)
(starling)
Thick lashes framing deep brown eyes as the lids drift half closed. Another stick added to the embers. Small flames flikcering upwards. Golden light dancing, wavering across high cheekbones and deep coppery skin. Shadows and light blending, melding, dancing across Native American features.
closer, now (beneath loving attention the flames rise to lick the sky) his attention caught like a moth to Luna's crying (laughing) facecuriosity boils (screaming) to the surface
though the lean form stops just shy the open circle in the trees, politely waiting to be noticed (still watching, so warily) rather than intrude on another's camp (some of the old ways still remain, easily remembered and manipulated) shoulder against a treetrunk, shirt dangling open revealing tanned (scarred) skin beneath
(starling)
The open area consisting of a small haphazard collection of buildings. The largest being a rough looking home. Faint light coming from the front room of the house, spilling through the sceen door. Quiet here, just the popping of wood as the moisture held within, expands and explodes.
uneven blue eyes (one dark, one light, day and night trapped in his skull) search, studying the buildings, the figure lounging, listening to the lyrical percussion created by the sounds of the fire consuming (destroying) the pine, entranced by the (pheonix) rising (in the) swirling, rising smokethe gaze drops as a tank boot snaps a twig beneath shifting weight
(starling)
Dark head snapping towards the sound. Brown eyes narrowing against the dark, looking for the source of the sound. Recent events setting her on edge. One hand straying towards the shotgun.
cover blown, lean form leaves the shadows rather than risk being shot, a step taken to bring the man (monster) into half light, hands raised - empty"I didn't mean to startle you......"
a angel's (fallen) voice smoothing from beneath the easy smile
"I......" laughter, rich, the moon dancer's gift "..... hate to admit it, but I got lost on the trail. Smelled the fire and though I could get directions......."
(starling)
At least he wasn't asking for others by name, yet. Firelight flickering across her features as she nods to him. Finally speaking out, softly. "You should carry a light for night trips. I personally tend to stick close to familiar territory at night." Rich coppery skin gleaming in the faint light as she lifts her arm, pointing towards the east. "That way there is a trail that eventually ends at a road."
again that laughter spans the distance between them, head ducking to bring blond bangs a torrent cascade across brow (so shy)"I'll remember that...... I thought to return to places more familiar by dusk, though apparently I was lead astray"
the smile (inviting) widening young man's features (no pack, no canteen, only boots, jeans, and short sleeve button-up that hangs open - so brave a man to travel so unsupplied) few steps taken in the pointed direction, though it brings him closer to the fire, words dancing across his tongue as the flames writhe in the air
"Mind if I cop a squat for a few minutes? I've been walking for awhile....."
(starling)
Dark hair swaying with the slight negative shake of her head. "No, feel free to rest a bit. If you'd like, I can go in and get you some water or a soft drink." Resting her arms behind her on the log in preperation to stand.
"I'd be grateful for the hospitality."once near the fire those dual-colored eyes show above the widening (boyishly charming) smile
"I thought I'd have to create something out of thin air if I didn't find a river soon....."
winked, as if it could only be a joke (unless you know..... tell me you know) legs folding beneath to settle comfortably against a log
(starling)
One tapered brow lifting slightly. She'd heard tales, but never saw it or knew of anyone that really could do something like that. Taking it as coincidence, a play on words as she rises. "Water or Coke?" Brushing one hand across the seat of her shorts to dust them off.
the (jack-o-lantern) grin widens, answering the question of lifted brow (but what -exactly- was the question)"Water is fine.... thank you"
(starling)
A short cant of her head in response before bending to take the shotgun with her. Heading inside to vanish with a squeal of hinges and the slamming of the screen door against the frame.
the gun is eyed warily (who is more leery of whom) but the seemingly tired boy (man) slumps against the log to rest, half mast eyes watching the fire as it dances, patiently waiting (recovering from the long walk, right?)(starling)
The sound of the screen door announcing her return as she comes back through the dark towards the firepit to offer the glass to Asher. Ice clinking against the glass. "I'm Starling."
relief sags in shoulders, gratefully reaching for the (chilling glass)"Thank you, Starling....."
sighed, only after long (refreshing) draught, hand offered in shake
"Phelps...... is this.... your.... territory?"
tentative, words carefully chosen of the ones used before, a hope in strange eyes (friend or family?)
(starling)
"I stay here, but this place is not mine. It belongs to another and she allows myself and any that desire to stay here." Cocking her head slightly. "Would you like a refill?" He certainly was thirsty.
his head shakes"No.... thank you though."
the cant of his head mimicking hers
"Any others passing through or......?"
careful, always careful when stranger in a strange land
(starling)
"There have been the occassional one passing through." Retaking her seat and laying the shotgun down against the ground to her otherside. "You should be wary out here, especially at night."
that smile (inviting, tempting) appears across his face again, soft laughter waltzing from his tongue"I've heard....."
gesturing with the empty glass (a galliard at a campfire)
"...... mention of monsters and other things that stalk the woods. I think a part of why I neglected keeping eye on the sun was that I wanted to find them....."
mismatched (unnatural) eyes bright (hoping)
(starling)
Dark hair shimmering in the firelight with the faint shaking of her head. "You don't want to find them. They'll find you soon enough as it is."
a brow lifts, jaw tilting in curiosity's concern"Oh? Will you tell me more.....?"
(starling)
Uncertain what he was. Considering for a moment before replying with an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause concern. As you said, there are stories and tales of this area. There's always some truth in tales."
that easy (trusting) smile returns"Isn't there?"
coy, crooning, muscular shoulders lift in a shrug (shirt falling open, those strange scars on his belly) as eyes lift to hers once more
"I had hoped to find them..... to tell you the truth. Dismiss it to a..... personal calling.... of sorts. I'm a lit student and feel something of a.... kinship..... to myth and magick, I guess..."
laughed off, softly, a grad student's obsession...... right?
(starling)
"You may find it at that. Be careful what you wish for." Brown gaze dropping along his torso with the opening of his shirt. Not missing the scars on his stomach. "Myth and magic, an interesting way of putting it."
the scars (glyphs) slowly move with each breath, chuckle softening"Garners fewer strange looks....."
(starling)
"That all depends on who you are speaking to." A faint smile ghosting across her lips for a moment.
